Factory owners in Bangladesh are dashing to meet obligations before Eid-ul-Fitr. They are hurrying to pay unpaid wages and bonuses to their workers. The holiday is near. Today is the last working day before Eid. But, many factories have yet to pay their workers for March.
The Industrial Police have new data. It covers eight areas. They are industrial and labor-intensive: Ashulia, Gazipur, Chittagong, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Khulna, Comilla, and Sylhet. In those areas, over 51% of factories had not paid March salaries to their workers as of Monday. Also, nearly 19% of the factories had not paid the Eid bonus. This bonus is a custom in Bangladesh to reward workers before a major Muslim holiday.
Out of the 9,469 factories in these areas, 51.21% had outstanding March wages, whereas 81.35% had successfully provided their workers with the Eid bonus. The vast majority of these establishments are garment and textile factories, which play a crucial role in Bangladesh’s economy, being one of the world’s leading apparel producers.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) reports that 41.06% of its 1,561 member factories have paid wages. This comes as costs have risen due to higher wages, electricity, and gas prices. Also, interest rates on bank loans have surged. BGMEA President S M Mannan Kochi highlighted these challenges. But, he assured that most factory owners had paid bonuses. Many had also paid wages.
Kochi further stated that issues in a few factories had been resolved, including one in Mirpur, which sold machinery to pay off its workers. New problems have emerged in two factories. They are in Ashulia and Mirpur. But, 89% of BGMEA-affiliated factories have paid wages, so there’s optimism. Banks are open today. There’s hope in the industry that all workers will get their wages and bonuses before Eid. This will ensure a joyful celebration for all.
This scenario shows the garment sector’s strength and commitment to worker welfare. It is despite economic pressures. They ensure that Eid-ul-Fitr stays festive for thousands of workers and their families.
