The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) said it will raise the prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for consumers. This move will affect homes and businesses across the country. Starting from this evening, the cost for a 12 kg LPG cylinder will now be 1,482 BDT, up from the previous price of 1,474 BDT.

This latest change reflects an ongoing trend in the energy sector. Gas prices have been fluctuating. Just last month, in February, the BERC had already adjusted the prices, marking a 41 BDT increase for the same 12 kg LPG cylinder, setting the price at 1,474 BDT.

The price hike is not limited to household LPG usage but also impacts the autogas sector. In a similar adjustment last month, the price of autogas, including VAT, was set at 67.76 BDT per liter. This affected consumers who rely on LPG for their vehicles.

The BERC made the announcement at 3 PM on Sunday (March 3), stating that the new prices are effective immediately. The regulator did not specify the reasons for this increase. But, it is widely understood that global market trends and local supply and demand are key factors in setting energy commodity prices, like LPG.

This price hike is expected to have a ripple effect on the cost of living and the operational costs of businesses that depend on LPG for cooking and heating. Consumers and business owners are concerned about the rising financial burden. This worry comes at a time when the economy faces many challenges.

Experts urged the government and regulators to consider the impact of these price changes on the public. They should explore ways to ease the financial strain on consumers.
